That concern arose because of a few hunters who constructed deer stands in the property line between Schrag and their neighbors – without first getting permission from the Schrags, or the neighbors. The biggest concern voiced during planning and zoning hearings was keeping guests off surrounding property and control of hunting to make sure it did not extend off the Schrag’s property. The tree house is the only structure that the county permitted. The cabin is not handicap accessible, though with less than five rooms and limited square footage that was not a concern. Water will be tested yearly for nitrates and bacteria to make sure it is safe for human consumption. The Schrags were able to put in water lines, power lines and a sewer system for the vacation rental. The conditional use permit is for one cabin only and does not apply to any other structures. “This is a unique situation that I think that people with kids, people who want to get away from everything will just love,” said Karen Rothe, director of planning and zoning of Harvey County. The couple’s farm at 1734 SE 96th serves as the entrance, with parking for up to 10 vehicles next to the family barn. and is located on 40 acres near Spencer Rd. The Schrag vacation rental, which will be limited to short-term rental under a required conditional use permit from the county is 600 sq. They also have constructed commercial use tree houses and permanent homes. They company lists “Vacation Rentals” as one of the three uses for tree houses they construct. “It is really a cool technology that they have built and they have put … these up around the world.”Īccording to the Nelson Treehouse website, more than 350 of the tree houses have been constructed. “When the wind blows the building it does not move if the trees move,” Byron Schrag said. Schrag said that the tree house is built to deal with Kansas wind. “ … They drew the plans for us and we used the technology that they have used all around the world in the trees.” “The state of Washington certifies some of the stuff that goes into the trees to support it,” Byron Schrag said. The company offered assistance, helping with the design of the tree house and technology to assist with construction. The Schrags enlisted a little help for the project – contacting one of the producers of “Tree House Masters,” a television show about Nelson Treehouse Company. “It is really, really unique,” Byron Schrag said. They wanted to do something different, and they were able to do just that.
